For the employee who survives and cannot go back to work.

Death is the risk employers insure first, and it is not the most likely one. An accident that takes someone out of work for a year, or permanently, costs a family more over time and lasts longer. Medical cover pays the hospital. Nothing on a standard benefits schedule replaces the income.

Group disability and accident cover fills that gap. It pays lump sums for serious injury and, where you include it, a continuing income while someone is unable to work.

Two covers, often confused

Group personal accident pays a lump sum on death or serious injury caused by an accident, usually as a multiple of salary, with a scale for specific injuries. It is inexpensive and it settles quickly.

Disability or income protection cover is the longer promise. It replaces a proportion of salary while an employee is unable to work, after a waiting period, and it can continue for years. It costs more and it does considerably more, particularly for illness rather than injury, which personal accident cover does not touch.

Occupational cover or full cover?

This is the choice that decides whether your policy pays. Occupational cover responds to accidents at work or travelling to it. Around the clock cover responds wherever the accident happens, which is where most accidents happen. The difference in premium is smaller than the difference in outcome, and it is worth understanding before you choose the cheaper line.

Employers in construction, logistics, manufacturing and field services usually treat this as essential rather than optional, and their insurers price accordingly. Tell us what your people actually do, not just what the trade licence says.

Where it fits

Placed alongside group life and group health insurance, these three cover most of what can go wrong for an employee. Arranged together they share underwriting, share a renewal date, and give you one conversation instead of three.

FAQ

1. Is this the same as workmen’s compensation?

They overlap and they are not the same. Workmen’s compensation responds to your legal obligations as an employer for work related injury. Group personal accident is a benefit you provide to your staff, and it can extend well beyond the workplace. Many employers hold both, for different reasons.

2. Does it cover illness, or only accidents?

Personal accident cover responds to accidents only. If you want protection for an employee unable to work through illness, that is income protection or long term disability cover, and it needs to be arranged deliberately rather than assumed.

3. How long does an income benefit continue?

It depends on the terms you choose. Some policies pay for a fixed period, commonly two to five years. Others continue to retirement age while the disability lasts. The longer the promise, the higher the premium, and it is worth deciding which one you actually want to make.

4. Are staff covered while travelling for work?

Under around the clock cover, generally yes, worldwide. Under occupational cover, work travel is usually included but personal travel is not. Check the wording against how much your people move, because this is a common gap.
